MONUMENT FOR TWO LOVERS
2.20 x 1.25 x 0.30 m
What made this commission extraordinary was the husband of the deceased, Frank. A strong, energetic man whose great love had died. While he talks about Mieke, their daughters and himself, I am all ears. I feel humble and grateful to be able to do this. Perhaps this is the most important thing I can do as an artist. Frank was charmed by my Monument for Two Lovers, but I never make the same sculpture twice. I did consent to let him have the title. I used Mieke’s painting of sunflowers in red and yellow as inspiration.
IN MEMORY OF SEYD
Portugese and Guatemalan Verde marble
1,0 x 1,10 x 0,20 m
On the cemetery of St. Anna Parochie in Friesland, Holland were 7 unmarked graves of asylum seekers. 7 members of the Memento artists volunteered to make a gravestone/memorystone for the deceased. My asylum seeker’s name was Seyd Rasool Mavali, he lived to be 32 years old. Aside from that, I know nothing about him. Yes, he came to this strange land because his own country had become unsafe for him. I wish you, dear Seyd, what I would wish everyone….but then a little more.
MUSHROOM FOR ISA-LYNN
Various kinds of marble and onyx
0.65 x 0.75 x 0.10 m
Isa-Lynn only lived for seven days. But her role in her family is an important one. The mushroom her sister so admires contains elements that signify Isa-Lynn and her sisters and brother can play with them: a star, a heart and a fish.
DOUBLE MONUMENT FOR DAVE
Aurora rosa and Belgian bluestone curbs
1.36 x 1.36 x 1.36 m
When he was only eleven Dave died of a rare heart disease. His parents asked me to make a memory stone and something associated with it for in the garden, where his brother and sister play. This way Dave remains an active part of their lives.
